The European Parlament asks fashion retailers to control what goes on at their factories.
The European Parliament is talking to the government of Bangladesh, asking them to improve working conditions in their factories and to fight corruption in the supply chain.
These requests were made in a motion in which the parlament laments the death of 112 people in a fire at a garment factory in Bangladesh in November, adding to the deaths of 289 people in other plant in Pakistan.
More than 5000 textile factories
In Bangladesh alone there are more than 5,000 textile factories, employing about 3.5 million people. At present, the EU is the largest market for Bangladesh’s textile industry, which has become the second largest global supplier of this sector after China. 75% of Bangladesh’s exports are textiles.
